Darwin’s Intelligent Design

“We can no longer deny the power of natural nutrition in the complete health and well-being of pets.”~ Barbara Royal, DVM, CVA

We as veterinarians understand the importance of a well-balanced diet, especially in patients with health issues such as kidney disease. That’s why, in collaboration with Darwin’s natural pet products, I’m excited to introduce a natural and holistic prescription-only diet to improve kidney health.

Intelligent Design Veterinary Meals for Dogs

Dr. Royal’s Integrative KS Formula for Dogs is a superior quality raw food diet. This specialized, highly palatable nutrition helps support kidney function with specific ingredients that target optimal kidney health.

The KS Formula for Dogs is the first of its kind in my new line of raw foods developed with common-sense and science. I have spent the majority of my career building the bridge between natural, holistic health and modern medicine for animals. When clients including Oprah Winfrey and Barbra Streisand come to me with questions about their pets’ health, I advocate for strong common sense and cutting-edge approaches to maintaining optimal health.

Dr. Royal’s Integrative LS Formula for dogs is a specialized highly digestible, nutritious and sensible way to maintain overall health and help support proper Liver function. This diet combines excellent nutrition and carefully chosen ingredients that target optimal Liver health.

Each ingredient is chosen for its ability to support the overall health of the body, while specifically supporting these normal liver functions.  We start with Pacific Whitefish, sweet potato and beef tripe.  These three fresh and healthy ingredients provide highly bio-available proteins, amino acids, complex carbohydrates and helpful bacteria in an extremely palatable combination.

Integrative LS raw meals make sense: It all starts with a carefully designed raw meal that provides balanced nutrition as nature intended, using the highest quality ingredients available from U.S. sources.

Why KS Integrative Diet?

  • Because it is not heat processed, our raw food still contains valuable enzymes, more natural sources of vitamins and minerals, and beneficial bacteria to support the natural function of all body systems.
  • Kidney health relies on excellent fluid flow through the urinary system, proper electrolyte balance, appropriate tubule function, and healthy GI flora.  Raw foods have appropriate moisture content to help maintain a normal fluid flow to the kidneys.
  • Kidneys that are not functioning well need help with phosphorus binding.  This diet contains chitosan (Epakitin) which can help bind phosphorus in the food, before it gets to the kidneys.  The diet itself is low in phosphorus.  Raw foods naturally contain lower levels of phosphorus than processed foods.
  • Kidney patients often lose their appetite, develop chronic muscle wasting and weight loss.  It is important to provide a food that supports muscle development with excellent proteins, and is delicious enough to tempt even the most finicky pet.  The palatability of this raw meal is quite a change for a prescription diet.

What’s Inside?

Why did I choose the ingredients included in KS Formula for Dogs? The recipe has been carefully crafted from high-quality foods and herbs to benefit kidney patients. From high-quality protein to nutrient-rich vegetables to herbal supplements, each ingredient serves a specific purpose.

Ingredients – Nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated. This food is made with naturally simple ingredients, so you – and your patients – will recognize and be able to pronounce everything included in this food.

Beef Meat, Beef Tripe, Beef Pancreas, Beef Lungs, Beets, Beef Kidneys, Beef Liver, Beef Heart, Romaine Lettuce, Beef Spleen, Cabbage, Celery, Squash, Sweet Potato, Filtered Water (for processing), Sardine Oil (Source of EPA & DHA), Egg Shell Powder, Parsley, Apple Cider Vinegar, Inulin, Cornsilk, Couch Grass (Triticum), Dandelion Root, Cinnamon, Cranberry, Linden Flowers, Pipsissewa Leaves, Chitosan, Zinc Amino Acid Chelate, Vitamin E, Salt, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Potassium Iodide, Vitamin D3, Aloe Vera.

Why Herbal Supplements?

Couch Grass – In Europe, couch grass is used as a mild diuretic and demulcent, to treat inflammation and infections in the urinary tract and remove impurities from the blood and to lower blood sugar.  A tonic for the urinary tract, it contains the volatile oil agropyrene, mucilage, potassium, zinc and other nutrients. Agropyrene has antibacterial properties.

Cornsilk – Contains allantoin, saponins and various sterols including B-sitosterol and stigmasterol, plus vitamins including C and K. It is commonly used as a tonic diuretic and to relieve kidney and bladder pain. It can be used to coat the lining of the urinary tract, reduce blood pressure and decrease sediment formation in the kidneys.

Dandelion root – Used as a diuretic and to lower blood pressure.  It also has antibacterial properties.  A nutritive tonic and digestive aid, it has been used to clear the body of toxins.  Dandelion is high in antioxidants, vitamin C and potassium.  It is also a source of iron and B vitamins that are essential for the formation of new red blood cells in anemic patients.

Linden Flowers – Often used to relieve stress, relax or soothe an anxious patient, Linden flowers contain the essential oil sesquiterpene (farnesol), which has sedative and antispasmodic properties. Linden flowers can be useful in reducing kidney pain and cramping and reducing blood pressure.

Pipssissewa Leave – A Canadian Cree Indian term meaning “to break into small pieces” because of its ability to dissolve kidney stones.  It is effective by diuretic clearing, tonifying and soothing irritation in the urinary tract.  Pipssissewa leaves are also known as wintergreen, ground holly, wax flower and prince’s pine.

Cinnamon – Cinnamon has been used to lower/stabilize blood sugar, and to warm and improve circulation to organs. This helps to improve circulation to kidney tubules.

Cranberry – Contains anthocyanins, Vitamin C, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. The properties in cranberry are able to bind to bacterial pilli in e.coli so that they can’t adhere to cell walls in the urinary tract.
