Excerpt from “The Royal Treatment Pocket Guide to Pet Food”

As an integrative veterinarian and nutrition lecturer, with 20 years of experience helping animals eat themselves healthy, I know that a Biologically Correct diet is essential. This means feeding a dog or cat the ideal food for a carnivore. Just because their biology allows them to survive difficult times by eating sub-optimal foods, doesn’t mean this is what we should feed them all the time. Animals will not thrive or remain healthy on foods that are not what their body was made to eat. Sharp teeth and claws, swift prey drive, vision for hunting, specialized carnivore GI tract, and many more features define our little living room carnivores.

Both dog and cat diets should have appropriate amounts of fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, probiotics and moisture – balanced and complete. This is best done with natural, fresh ingredients that a carnivore’s body would recognize.

But as for the number one best food? Well, there isn’t one. Variety is always a good thing for a little predator. Their bodies wouldn’t expect to eat the same thing for their whole life. They do well with a diet that varies protein sources, that even varies in the brand of food.

Dr. Royal has formulated a line of raw food available by prescription for kidney and liver conditions.  Click here to learn more.
